Ingredients

1 cup half and half
1 cup milk
9 large eggs
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 pinch ground cinnamon
¼ cup unsalted butter
½ cup packed light brown sugar
1 tbsp light corn syrup
½ cup syrup (for serving)
2 Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji or Red Delicious apples — peeled, thinly sliced
6 slices Texas toast or ½ loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Powdered sugar, flavoured cream cheese, strawberries (optional)

💡 Tip: Granny Smith apples add a pleasant tartness that balances the sweetness — highly recommended over sweeter varieties.

Directions

1
Night Before

Melt butter in a small skillet; stir in brown sugar and corn syrup. Spread the butter mixture into a greased 13×9 inch baking dish. Arrange apple slices evenly over the butter mixture, then top with bread slices.

2
Night Before

In a large bowl, beat eggs on medium speed for 3 minutes. Add half and half, milk, granulated sugar and vanilla extract; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread slices. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

🌙

Refrigerate overnight — This allows the bread to fully absorb the egg custard mixture, resulting in a richer, creamier texture when baked. Do not skip this step!

3
Next Morning

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator. Sprinkle chopped nuts and cinnamon evenly over the bread. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes, or until bread is golden brown and set.

4
Serving

Serve with warm syrup. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and top with cream cheese if desired. Garnish with fresh strawberries for a beautiful and nutritious finishing touch.

Nutritionist's Note: This is an indulgent treat best enjoyed occasionally. The eggs provide high-quality protein (18g) and the apples contribute natural fibre and antioxidants. To reduce calories, use low-fat milk instead of half-and-half and reduce butter by half. Walnuts add heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids — keep them in!
